MIT Early Childhood Cognition Lab

The Early Childhood Cognition Lab looks at how children develop the concepts and causal relations that creates the foundation of our understanding of ourselves, others, and the world around us. Studying the factors for exploration and engagement, the lab develops models of learning that support the fundamental principles of learning.

The Education Arcade

The Scheller Teacher Education Program and The Education Arcade explore the playful side of the learning process. Our research-driven design results in games, tools, and curriculums that support playful, exploratory learning.

MIT Gabrieli Lab

Studying the factors for exploration and engagement, the lab develops models of learning that support the fundamental principles of learning.

J-PAL North America Logo-01

J-PAL North America

Based in the MIT Department of Economics, J-PAL North America works to reduce poverty through research, policy outreach, and capacity building. Through its education work, J-PAL North America seeks to improve access to and delivery of high-quality schooling through research on issues like pedagogy, teacher training, education technology, school governance, and early childhood development.

Laboratory for Social Machines

While there are a number of literacy technology solutions developed for individuals, the role of “social machines”–or social literacy learning–is less explored. We believe that literacy is an inherently social activity that is best learned within a supportive community network including peers, teachers and parents. By creating technology that is child-driven, machine-guided, we hope to empower human learning networks in order to establish a nutrient medium for literacy growth while enhancing personal, creative, and autonomous interactions within communities.

Lifelong Kindergarten Group

The Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab develops new technologies that, in the spirit of the blocks and fingerpaint of kindergarten, expand the range of what people can design, create, and learn.

Personal Robots Group

The Personal Robots Group at the MIT Media Lab focuses on developing the principles, techniques, and technologies for personal robots. The group is developing prototypes of the apps for this project. MIT also collaborates with Tufts and GSU to help develop and refine the data collection tools, to get feedback on the apps, and use this feedback to refine the design and improve the platform.

Teaching Systems Lab [TSL]

With the generous support of the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, MIT has established the Teaching Systems Lab. The Teaching Systems Lab investigates technology-mediated STEM classrooms of the future and the systems that are needed to prepare teachers to thrive in those environments. The Teaching Systems Lab is the incubator for the Woodrow Wilson Academy of Teaching and Learning (WWA), an independent, competency-based teacher education program launching in June of 2017.

School Effectiveness & Inequality Initiative

The School Effectiveness and Inequality Initiative is a research program based in the MIT Department of Economics. SEII focuses on the economics of education and the connections between human capital and the American income distribution.

Strategic Education Initiatives [SEI]

Strategic Education Initiatives (SEI) in the MIT Office of Digital Learning supports MIT’s partnerships with other universities, foundations and trusts, non-governmental organizations, and national governments to experiment with and implement digital learning. Some SEI projects span across nations and hundreds of schools, helping to advance the field of digital learning for practitioners, researchers, and learners at MIT and around the world.
